The 2010-2020 period was an interesting one for English football, with the Three Lions being eliminated from major tournaments twice, Wales closing in on their first major final and the Premier League having seen four different champions. However, it was also a golden era for British football.
Many of the United Kingdom’s national teams have gone on to great success and enjoyed hugely successful careers. Today we take a look back at the top 10 players from the United Kingdom at the time.
1. Gareth Bale
Bale has won the PFA Player of the Year award twice, won four European Cups with Real Madrid between 2014 and 2018, scored some incredible goals and was a key figure in Wales’ run to the last four of Euro 2016. He is undoubtedly the greatest player of all time for the Red Dragons.
2. Wayne Rooney
After starting the 2010s by winning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year awards, Rooney continued to find the net for clubs such as Manchester United and the country, and left the Red Devils as their all-time leading scorer.
3. Harry Kane
Kane was appointed England captain ahead of the 2018 World Cup and was well on his way to becoming Spurs’ all-time top goalscorer, a feat he has since achieved, and is undeniably one of the best strikers in the ยูฟ่าเบท world right now.
4. Raheem Sterling
Sterling is a threat to opposing defences whether playing in midfield, on the wing or up front, and has been a consistent performer for Liverpool, Man City and England, including countless trophies with the Citizens.
5. Jamie Vardy
As Leicester City surprisingly won the Premier League title in 2015/16, Vardy, playing as a number nine, scored 24 goals, despite having played for non-league side Stocksbridge Park the previous six years, with his pace and clinicalness establishing him as one of the best strikers in the world.
6. Kyle Walker
Walker established himself as one of the best right-backs in the world in the 2010s and has continued to develop since moving to Manchester City in 2017, winning numerous trophies and playing a key role in England’s run to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.
7. John Terry
Retiring from international football in 2012 enabled Terry to extend his Chelsea career and the iconic Blues captain has lifted eight major trophies during that time and is undeniably one of the finest centre-backs in English football.
8. Steven Gerrard
Gerrard is a Liverpool and England legend and remained at the top of his game throughout the 2010s. A box-to-box midfielder, Stevie G was a driving force for both club and country and wore the Three Lions armband at Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup.
9. Dele Alli
In the second half of the 2010s, Alli was one of the most promising attacking midfielders in world football, winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2016 and 2017. Unfortunately, the former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker’s reign was all too short.
10. Aaron Ramsey
Ramsey is considered one of Wales’ greatest ever players, having won three trophies with Arsenal and was twice named the Gunners’ Player of the Season in 2014 and 2018. In 2016, he also led the Dragons to the semi-finals of the European Championship, where they were defeated 2-0 by Portugal.
